The vineyards of Kamnik

The climate

The vineyards are located on hills with a southern exposure on the slopes. The surrounding mountains ensure an excellent microclimate for the vines.

Air currents circulating from the mountains effectively reduce summer evening temperatures while keeping the soil warm during winter.

The terroir

The Kamnik estate is located in the Vardar Valley, the wine region of Skopje, at the eastern entrance of the city. The current 15 hectares of vineyards and the winery itself are spread across hills at a minimum altitude of 300 meters above sea level, positioned on southern slopes.

The vineyards are planted with a density of 5,500 vines per hectare and are cultivated using the “single Guyot” pruning system. The moderately fertile soil (cinnamon-type soil) is characterized by a good mechanical composition, providing ideal conditions for balanced vine growth and development.

Winemaking at Kamnik

It all began with a personal fascination for the art of winemaking by founder Ilija Malinkovski, a wine enthusiast from Skopje, and his partner Goran Milanov, the only person in the country with a PhD in oenology and currently director of the local Wine Institute. This sparked a passion for modern and authentic Macedonian winemaking traditions.

The step from collecting wines from around the world to planting the first vines and transforming them into vineyards soon followed. Building the foundations of the château, the winery and the cellar, along with acquiring the first barrels and bottling the first wines, was a major undertaking. Many journeys around the world followed to present their wines.

The crowning achievement has been winning several major awards. The founder shared his vision with a team of exceptional people. Together, they embarked on a journey to create Kamnik wines—remarkable expressions that combine past, present and future, bringing their story to life.
